Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of Oct. 9-15, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence.

Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; South Hilo, five; Puna, four; North Hilo, Hamakua, Puna and South Kohala, one each.

There have been 661 major collisions so far this year, compared with 653 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.2%.

To date, there have been 15 official fatalities, compared to 27 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 44.4%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
